Fixed: Global Fixed-Gear Bike Culture

A fixed-gear bike is a thoroughbred racing machine, the cycle messenger’s workhorse and, for many street riders an aesthetic choice. Each bike is a statement of individuality that stands out from the hundreds of grey hybrids lined up at the traffic lights. A global fixed-gear culture has come into being.

Fixed is the first book to document global fixed-gear culture. It joins the dots between the bike’s design, its racing heritage and the customization that marks its appearance on our city streets. It meets the track stars, tricksters, messengers, hill bombers and polo players the world over, linking them to the artists, designers and framebuilders whom the bike has inspired. It tells the story of why these bikes are special through interview, image and archive – exploring the form, function, style and culture at the heart of the obsession.

BLAQ Bags

Paul from BLAQ had sent me this bag as a prize for the Rose City Fix event... which I declined to give it away because I wanted it. Hey, I think I deserve a little treat too! Of all the bags I received for this event... this one bag clearly caught my attention.

I was immediately drawn to the color scheme... with its purple accents and that awesome screened silhouette depicting a drive chain. Like Chrome, BLAQ incorporated the same buckle system. But what sets this buckle system apart from Chrome is that they used a recycled buckle. And I’m all about recycling! The material used in the construction of this bag is 1000 Denier Cordura which is a heavyweight workhorse fabric. The bag features two large front pockets with numerous column pockets for your pens, mini-pump, tools, etc. The interior of the bag also features two large pockets with a nice main compartment that is truly spacious.

It didn’t take me long to test this bag. From shipping box to my back... I was off to the Rose City Fix. My gawd... this bag was so comfortable. My biggest problem with courier bags in the main torso strap. They are either too long or have way too much seatbelt webbing. But this bag was PERFECT in all measurements! I was never a fan of packing a heavy bag, but with this bag... I packed it heavy for the event and it still retained its comfortability... as it contoured perfectly to the shape of my body.

I’ll admit it... this bag is my favorite so far. Before our U-haul cargo van was broken into and our bikes were stolen, I was hesitant in leaving this bag in the van. I’m glad I made the right choice and taking it with me. Though, I wish I was more cautious about the bike situation. You win some... you lose some.

Paul... THIS BAG ROCKS!

Stolen: Jake's 3Rensho + Patrick's Pista Concept

EVERYONE... OUR BIKES WERE STOLEN!
This was a sad day for Jake Ricker (Laali), Jacopo Volpe (Dodici), Ryan Schuetze (Go Means Go), and myself (Patrick/PEDAL Consumption). Last night around 11:55PM, we returned to our U-Haul van that was parked a few blocks from the Rotture on MLK & Ash St. Immediately, we noticed the window was broken. Our bikes, two frames w/forks, and several bags were stolen. We know this had to be the work of more than one person. What’s strange is that the thieves didn’t take the third frame w/fork and a rim set. Maybe they had to much to carry... who knows?

We did this event for the Fixed Gear community of Portland. I worked my ass off to get prizes for everyone because I wanted to take part in helping people who I embrace. I even used my own money to help promote this event. The top picture is Jake’s 3Rensho and the bottom photo is a color example of my Pista Concept. The Pista Concept was just built, so I didn’t get a chance to take photos... except when I did a Hold Fast review which doesn’t show much.

Anyhow, is this how we treat people who visit our town? It’s FUCKED UP! What’s even worse is that I had to pay $200 to U-haul for the broken window... and that included me getting insurance which proved to be useless!

Patrick's Bike
• Frame: Pista Concept 2007 (white)
• Front Wheel: Phil Wood Low-Flange (silver), H Plus Son (gold), DT Swiss Spokes (black)
• Rear Wheel: Phil Wood Low-Flange (silver), H Plus Son (gold), DT Swiss Spokes (black)

• Cranks: Sugino 75 (black)
• Bottom Bracket: Sugino 75
• Chainring: Sugino 75 - 44t (black)
• Pedals: Odyssey Twisted PC (black)
• Toe Straps: Hold Fast

Jake's Bike
• Frame: 3Rensho (purple-metallic)
• Front Wheel: SPIN Tri-Spoke (white)
• Rear Wheel: Chub Hub (black), H Plus Son Formation Face (black)
• Headset: Campy NJS (silver)
• Stem: Dura-Ace (silver)
• Handlebars: Syntace Pursuit Bars (silver)
• Seatpost: Thomson Elite (silver)
• Saddle: Sam Marco Rolls Ti (white)
• Cranks: Sugino 75 (silver)
• Bottom Bracket: Hatta
• Chainring: Sugino 75 - 49t (silver)
• Pedals: MKS Sylvan (silver)
• Toe Straps: Cadence Double (black)

Other Items Stolen
• Jake's custom Freight Baggage (black) bag that contained a digital and film camera and a $400 Patagonia jacket (black)
• Ryan’s shoulder bag containing 10 Macaframa DVD’s and Go Means Go shirts
• Dodici Veloce frame (pink/chrome) w/chrome fork
• Leader 721TR Track Frame/Fork (white)

Who ever has any helpful information, please contact me. We are offering a reward... NO QUESTIONS ASKED! I don't think the thieves realize who they stole from and most likely WILL get caught. So if the thieves are reading this, either drop off everything you stole at City Bikes on Ankeny & 8th (NO QUESTIONS ASKED) or contact me at patrick@pedalconsumption.com or email Jake at jakericker@gmail.com (NO QUESTIONS ASKED).

We filed a police report, so if you have any information, feel free to call Officer Joel M. Ockunzzi (#49841) of the Portland Police Department. The case number is 090 72910.

Sitting around and waiting magically for our bikes to reappear is wishful thinking. So we thought we make a fundraiser to rebuild what we have lost. Any donation will be greatly appreciated. I’d do the same for you in you were in our shoes. For more information and to make a donation... go HERE or click the “donate” tab in the menu.

Seagull Bags x Rose City Fix

Seagull Bags was one of our last minute sponsors who came through with a BANG! When I saw that embroidered rose, I was shocked with happiness. With all our bag sponsors, I was wondering if any of them would try to incorporate the City of Rose’s into the design. So you can imagine how thrilled I was when I saw this bag!

I really love the shape of this bag... with its contoured front flap. The double front pockets are SUPER deep! So many essentials can go into these spacious pockets... especially your tall boys! The compression strap system adjusts to all your custom needs. What I thought was really cool is the female plastic buckle on the secondary strap (strap under the armpit) is adjustable... it can slide up or down on the main padded strap for that desired position.

As you can see from the bottom picture... this bag is extremely spacious. The inside of the bag also features a solo pocket for all your precious (i.e., wallet, purse, iPod) items. I really can’t get over the embroidered rose. Honestly, I was never into roses until I moved to Portland... now I love them!

Bag Schwag!

It’s amazing to think that there is such a HUGE talent-pool of bags makers amongst us. I really have to give credit to the underdogs such as Velo City Bags, Mer, and Under The Weather. Though, you may not see them in every cookie-cutter bike shop around the corner, you should support these bag makers because they are truly helping the growth of the cycling industry. And the personal detail in each bag is superb!

The Velo City Bag was quite impressive at first glance. You could not believe how gracious the space was when fully packed. The construction, compression strap system, and detail is out of this world! I also like their distinctive pattern on the front panel. You really can’t miss this trademark logo. Seriously, I was truly tempted to keep this jewel, but I knew some lucky person would really be happy winning it. After the lucky winner picked up his bag, I got a chance to see it being used right off the bat. It was incredible to see how many items and prizes he was stuffing into this bag. He was stoked!

The Mer bag is simple, clean, and very functional. Bags often go overboard with their innumerable little pockets which truly seems like a waste of time and space. You know the feeling when your in a rush and you can’t remember which pocket you put that certain item in... it’s a pain in the ass! So it’s nice to get a bag like this one with simple huge pockets. I’d rather dig than open every velcro flap I can find.

Under The Weather sent an entry-level bag that was light and well constructed. Canadians got it going on too! I only wish this bag had some sort of padding around the shoulder/torso strap. But overall... a nice looking and functional bag. I would recommend this bag to anyone who is looking for something simple, inexpensive... but at the same time functional.

Big shout out to Velo City Bags, Mer, and Under The Weather... your prizes were truly appreciated!

Jerry Wins Leader 722TS Frame & Fork

Jerry was one of our early prizes winners for the Rose City Fix. He was given a Leader 721TR Track Frame which was stolen from our U-Haul. It just happens that Sal from Leader was sending this 722TS Track Frame for our event as well... but didn’t arrive on time. Thank gawd it didn’t arrive on time because it would have most likely been stolen as well. Jerry was STOKED when we gave it to him! Brenton Salo snapped these picts of pure enjoyment. Even with our stuff being stolen... we keep on giving! None of this would have been made possible if it wasn’t for the awesome people like Sal at Laeder!

Results: Rose City Fix 08.15.09

Congratulations to all that participated in the Rose City Fix event on Saturday in Portland, OR! A great turnout with wonderful weather and a day filled with fun on two wheels.  The organizers really did a great job of putting it together, and I feel thankful to have been a part of it.

It sounds like this is looking to be an annual event in Portland, and hopefully this event inspired some people to get out there and organize some races and events!  A HUGE thanks to Backspace, which hosted the finish to the race as well as the award ceremony, to all the sponsors;  but especially to Jacopo, owner of Dodici frames, who donated a custom Dodici frame and fork to the winner of the race.  He came over from Italy to be a part of the fun, is a great guy, and you should check out his frames!

Out of the 53 racers that started, 39 finished before the race was called 1hr 45 min later.

Leaf Cycles Swag

Leaf Cycles sent me some swag for the Rose City Fix event. I received a set of sealed Magnesium pedals that weigh 372 grams/pair... super light! The package also contained two sets of stems... Block and Evoblock. The Block is 42mm in length with a clamping area of 22.2mm for those who rock BMX bars. The Evoblock is also 42mm in length, but with a clamping area of 25.4mm. Both stems are for 1-1/8 steerers. Lastly, I got a few pairs of Lock-on and Nip Grip grips. Good swag for all you 700cmx riders!

Colossi Track Frame

Recently, Sander from Colossi sent me an AMAZING 55cm lugged track frame. His father Jan Kole completely handmade this frame from start... until finish. The lugs are smoothed onto the frame... making it look like it’s one piece. The CNC Machined precision dropouts are just mind-blowing. Seriously, I’m at a loss for words trying to describe something so perfect. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Colossi if you looking for a frame that can only be described as PERFECTION!

See full specs HERE!

Disclaimer: This frame will be featured as one of the GRAND PRIZES for the Rose City Fix event. We will absolutely make sure this frame goes to someone who is sized correctly for it.

Special thanks to Sander and Jan Kole.
